The US B-17 was the iconic American bomber of WW2. It served on all fronts and throughout the entire conflict. Its reputation was earned because it was primarily employed in the daylight strategic bombing campaign against Germany. It was the preferred bomber of the Eighth Air Force due to its ruggedness and survivability, even though the B-24 had a longer range and carried a heavier bomb load. Its role in the Pacific was limited as there were fewer industrial and military targets that were within its range.
