Midway Class Carrier Summary
The Midway class aircraft carriers were the pinnacle of US carrier design during WW2. The Midway was the lead ship of 6 planned carriers, however 3 were cancelled due to the end of the conflict. US war planners concluded that larger carrier designs with larger aircraft capacity was more survivable in combat. However to achieve this capacity, an armored deck could not be included, which left the ship more vulnerable to damage and fire. After a study of the British designs which had armored decks, the decision was made to provide at some deck and superstructure armor. This end design resulted in a very large ship with a capacity to hold 130 aircraft, 30-40 more than the Essex class.The Midway first entered service in September 1945 and would be refitted multiple times and remain in service until 1992.
