Tosa Class Battleship Summary

This is a 3D printed resin sculpt of the Tosa class battleship by EBard Models.

The Tosa class battleship design was a much larger version of the preceding Nagato class. Two ships were envisioned in the 1920s but were cancelled before completion in accordance with the Washington Naval Treaty.

The IJN began reevaluating the Nagato design in light of lessons learned from the Battle of Jutland in 1916. Experiments evaluating armor protection, and newly acquired information on the protective schemes of British and American capital ships highlighted the need for better protection of the main gun turrets and magazines, as well as thicker deck armor to protect against plunging fire. Existing methods of defense against mines and torpedoes had also proved to be inadequate and needed improvement. Several designs were rejected before a heavily modified version of the Nagato design was accepted in 1918.

The Tosa design called for 10 16 inch guns in 5 twin turrets and with commensurate armor to stop 16 inch shells. It incorporated nearly twice as much armor weight as the Nagato class, with a planned displacement of 39,900 tonnes, yet designed to achieve the same speed.

Both ships were laid down in late 1921, but were cancelled before completion. Tosa, the lead ship, was used in experiments testing the effectiveness of its armor scheme before being scuttled in the Bungo Channel. The hull of the second ship, Kaga, was converted into an aircraft carrier.

"This is another amazing model done right! The "meatball" as the Allies would say adds the extra touch for my dive bombers in the game. ; )" Charles Saul - Thursday, April 4, 2024
