Sparviero - HBG Summary
This is the 3D printed sculpt of the Italian Sparviero light aircraft carrier.
The Sparviero was designed and built during World War II by the Regia Marina. She was originally completed as an ocean liner, the MS Augustus, in 1927.
The superstructure was removed and have no island structure because the exhaust gases of the diesel engines would have been expelled laterally below the level of the flight deck.
She would have had a narrow flight deck, with an air group of either 34 fighters or 16 fighters and 9 torpedo bombers. The propulsion plant was to remain unchanged, giving an estimated speed of under 20 knots.
The war-time conversion was started in Genoa in 1942 originally under the name Falco then renamed Sparviero. Apart from removing the superstructure little else was done before the Italian capitulation in September 1943. The hull was captured by the Germans and was sunk on 5 October 1944 to block access to the port of Genoa. The wreckage was recovered after the war and finally scrapped in 1951.
If the Sparviero was completed prior to the war, she could have perhaps made a meaningful contribution to the various naval engagements in the Mediterranean. However, by the time she actually would have been completed, given the small compliment of aircraft, the slow speed, and the lack of complimentary naval aircraft designs, it is unlikely she could have made any meaningful contribution to the war effort.
Comes magnetized to hold 1 airplane.
Different deck insignia choices are available to make it easier to identify ship nationality. The flag image will be larger than the roundels.
