Ise Hybrid Aircraft Carrier Summary

This is a 3D printed sculpt of the Ise/Hyūga hybrid aircraft carrier by EBard Models

The two Ise-class battleships were built for the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) completed in 1918. The ships underwent several modernizations prior to the Second World War, but despite these efforts, they were considered obsolete at the start of the war and did not see significant action in the early years.

After the devastating carrier losses during the Battle of Midway in mid-1942, the class was rebuilt with a flight deck replacing the rear pair of gun turrets to give her the ability to operate an air group of floatplanes. The design was to accommodate 22 recoverable search planes, but the lack of both aircraft and qualified pilots prevented either from ever operating aircraft in combat.

Ise & Hyuga participated in the Battle off Cape Engaño in late 1944, where they helped to decoy the American carrier fleet supporting the invasion of Leyte away from the landing beaches. In early 1945, Hyūga participated in Operation Kita, during which she transported petrol and other strategic materials back to Japan. Both ships were placed into reserve status and were sunk in port during American airstrikes in July.
