IL-4 Summary
The Ilyushin Il-4 was a medium bomber of the Soviet Air Force and used as a torpedo bomber by the Soviet Naval Aviation. It was designed in 1938 and first entered production in 1940.
Although the Il-4 was a medium bomber, it had long range enabling strategic missions and it was used on several long-range bombing raids against Berlin in 1941. Mostly though is functioned in a short range, medium bomber role, allowing it to carry a larger bomb load.
The Il-4 was upgraded in 1942, and extra added weight was not offset by the newer engines, resulting in slower top speed of 251 mph. An attempt was with the Il-6 to improve performance by adding large diesel engines and heavier armament. The engines proved unreliable and production was never started. The Il-4 remained in production until 1945 with 5,200 being built.
