The IJN Shinano was the largest aircraft carrier of her time, but not considered a fleet carrier, because she was converted from a Yamato class batteship hull. Shinano incorporated many lessons learned from previous carrier sinkings. The battleship framework provided extremely thick hull armor protection but (15 inces) only where already installed, otherwise it was reduced to 6 inches. All this armor proection ultimately limited the number of aircraft she could hold to 47.
Partially complete by November 1944, she was to sail to the Kure Naval Base for final completion, and was sunk en route by a US submarine only 10 days after commissioning. Her sister ships, Yamato and Musashi, absorbed an incredible amount of damage before finally sinking, yet the Shinano went down with 4 torpedo hits. Her captain assumed the combination of strong armor protection and weaker US torpedos allowed Shinano to continue steaming at normal power. Unfortunately this caused severe flooding and exposed leaks in watertight joints. Shinano finally succumbed to the water taken onboard.
The Shinano game piece is the standard Japanese aircraft carrier sculpt in all the major A&A game versions. It comes with a unique, historically accurate flight deck decal and two strong neodymium rare earth magnets drilled into the bottom to hold two aircraft.
