I-16 Summary
The Soviet Polikarpov I-16 was the world's first low-wing cantilever monoplane fighter with retractable landing gear to attain operational status. The I-16 was introduced in the mid-1930s and participated in the Second Sino-Japanese War, the Battle of Khalkhin Gol, the Spanish Civil War, and the 1940 Finnish Winter War. At the outbreak of operation Barbarossa, the I-16 made up the majority of the Soviet fighter strength. By this time it was outdated, although they could still hold their own against older German fighters. By 1943, the I-16 was replaced.
