This is a 3D printed sculpt of the USS Yorktown by EBard Models.
The Yorktown carrier class benefited from knowlegde gained from the prior Lexington class and one-off Ranger (CV-4). The 3 ships of this class bore the brunt of the early war fighting.
The Ranger was built within the parameters of the Washington Naval Treaty and service experience showed the hull was too small to handle rough Pacific weather and flight deck insufficient to hold the envirsioned air wing. In addition, Ranger had virtually no protective features. She was relegated as a training ship.
The conversion of the USS Langley to a seaplane tender allowed the Navy to backfill the tonnage with the Wasp. Service experience validated the need for a longer hull and larger flight deck. However, there was no tonnage available for torpedo protection, which ultimately contributed to your her loss in the Pacific.
The abandonment of the naval treaties in 1937 allowed the US to begin building more carriers free of design limitations. The Yorktown and Enterprise were completed at this point, but this lead to some improvements to the Hornet. The full effects of the design freedom would be seen in the Essex class.
Members of the Yorktown class:
• USS Yorktown (CV-5) - Lost at Midway • USS Enterprise (CV-6) - Survived the war and was the most decorated ship of WW2 • USS Hornet (CV-8) - Sunk at the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands
