The Courageous class aircraft carriers were modified Courageous-class battlecruiser built for the Royal Navy during the First World War. These were modified as an aircraft carrier while under construction.
After her conversion, Furious was used extensively for trials of naval aircraft and later as a training carrier once the new armoured carriers like Ark Royal entered service in the late 1930s. Essentially obsolete by WW2, Furious spent most of the early war in the Atlantic hunting subs and protecting convoys, and later, ferrying aircraft to the front, or used as a training platform. She did participate in direct enemy attacks in the Norway and West Africa campaigns. Perhaps her most memorable action was attacking the German battleship Tirpitz and other targets in Norway during the first half of 1944.
Courageous became the first warship lost by the Royal Navy in WW2 when she was torpedoed by submarine in 1939. Glorious participated in the Norway compaign of 1940 and was sunk.
With newer and better carrier designs being brought into service, Furious was placed in reserve in September 1944 and decommissioned in April 1945.
