Abruzzi Class Cruiser Summary
This is a 3D printed resin sculpt of the Duca degli Abruzzi Class Cruiser by EBard Models.
The Condottieri class was a sequence of five different light cruiser classes of the Regia Marina (Italian Navy), although these classes show a clear line of evolution. They were built before World War II to gain predominance in the Mediterranean Sea. The ships were named after military commanders (condottieri) of Italian history.
The Duca degli Abruzzi-class cruisers were the final version of the Condottieri class and were larger and better protected than their predecessors. They sacrificed some speed for good protection (a scheme similar to the Zara-class heavy cruisers) and had ten (instead of eight) 6-inch /55 main guns.
With the armament increased by two extra 152 mm guns made these the most heavily armed light cruisers of Italy during world war 2.
Both ships of the class survived WW2 and served in the Italian Navy until the 1970s, with Giuseppe Garibaldi becoming in 1961 the first European guided missile cruiser.
